Alloy 31 is a nickel, chromium and molybdenum stainless steel with nitrogen and copper additions. It combines moderate tensile strength and high ductility with excellent corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid, reducing and oxidizing media and has strong resistance to corrosion and erosion corrosion in phosphoric environment. It has a face-centred cubic lattice. The 0.2% nitrogen content stabilizes the austenite and reduces the precipitation rate of intermetallic sigma phases. Technically qualified as a stainless steel, in reality, it covers the gap between high alloyed stainless steel and nickel alloys, performing some tasks as well as the latter while lowering the costs.
UNS N08031 stainless steel is a superaustenitic (highly alloyed) stainless steel formulated for primary forming into wrought products. Cited properties are appropriate for the annealed condition. Din 1.4562 is the EN numeric designation for this material. N08031 is the UNS number. And Alloy 31 is the common industry name. Alloy 31 has exceptional corrosion resistance to alkaline & halide-containing media, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, chlorine dioxide media, nitric acid as well as reducing & oxidizing medias. It is widely used in offshore & marine industries, chemical & petrochemical processing, pharmaceutical piping, oil and gas extraction, and ore digestion plants. Especially, Alloy 31 can be used for the fabrication of pressure vessels which may endure a wide temperature-range from cryogenic level to elevated temperatures(-196°C to 550 °C). It has a very high base cost among wrought superaustenitic stainless steels. In addition, it has a very high embodied energy and a moderately high ductility.
This grade of Alloy 31 bars also has additions of both nitrogen and copper. The properties of this alloy bar are a combination of moderate tensile strength along with high ductility and excellent corrosion resistance. The Nicrofer 3127 hMo UNS N08031 Pipe demonstrates excellent resistance to corrosion in not only sulfuric acid, but also in reducing and oxidizing media. This Alloy 31 N08031 Electropolished bars has strong resistance to both corrosion and erosion corrosion, especially in phosphoric acid containing environments.
When the Alloy 31 bar is used in Chloridoxid bleaching plants in paper production and if used in the presence of boiling 67% nitric acid, the alloy has Excellent resistance to both general and localized corrosion as well. Alloy 1.4562 welded pipes also has the ability to resist corrosion even in alkaline and acid halide containing media. Typically alloy grade UNS N08031 bars is known to have a PREN value of ≥ 48. A higher PREN value or pitting resistance equivalent number indicates that the resistance to pitting corrosion of that particular alloy grade is high. The alloy 31 bars can be used in settings where the temperature ranges between -196°C to 550°C.

Alloy 31 bars are commonly used in the construction industry for various purposes, such as reinforcing concrete structures, providing roofing support, and framing structures for buildings and bridges. Alloy 31 round bars are also used as dowel bars to join concrete and support pavements, highways, and bridges.
Industries such as automotive, aerospace, and marine rely heavily on Alloy 31 round bars for their strength, durability, and ability to perform in harsh environmental conditions. Alloy 31 round bars manufacture engines, transmissions, exhaust systems, and more components.
The food and beverage industry also uses Alloy 31 rods to maintain a clean and hygienic environment. The Alloy 31 round bars are used to manufacture equipment such as mixing tanks, storage tanks, and piping systems. Stainless steel’s resistance to corrosion also makes it ideal for processing acidic foods and beverages.
Alloy 31 round bars are commonly used in the medical industry for their ability to withstand sterilization, corrosion resistance, and strength. The round bars are used for manufacturing surgical instruments such as forceps, scissors, and tweezers. Alloy 31 is also used for implants such as bone screws and dental implants due to its ability to integrate with the body.
The energy industry also relies heavily on Alloy 31 round bars for their resistance to corrosion and ability to withstand extreme temperatures. The Alloy 31 round bars manufacture heat exchangers, boilers, and condensers.
