Stainless Steel 317L

Stainless Steel 317L(UNS S31703,1.4438) is a low carbon chromium-nickel-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel, has higher ductility, stress corrosion resistance, compressive strength and high temperature resistance. The low carbon provides resistance to sensitization during welding and other thermal processes. Compared with 316L, 317L steel has good seawater resistance and SCC resistance, and is used in chemical ships, chemical products Reactor and other chemical equipment requiring high corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel 317L Introduction:

317L stainless steel is a low-carbon grade 317 stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in acidic and alkaline environments. It is resistant to corrosive media such as sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. Due to its high molybdenum content and low carbon content, 317L stainless steel offers excellent resistance to chloride corrosion, making it suitable for seawater environments and media with high chloride concentrations.


The lower carbon content of 317L stainless steel makes it less susceptible to intergranular corrosion during welding, improving the corrosion resistance of welded joints. 317L stainless steel maintains excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties in high-temperature environments, making it suitable for high-temperature equipment. It is commonly used in chemical equipment, marine engineering, medical devices, and the pulp and paper industry.

Modulus of Elasticity: 193 GPa—at room temperature


Magnetic Permeability: Essentially non-magnetic in the annealed state. Can become slightly magnetic due to cold work. Magnetic permeability typically remains very low, µᵣ ≈ 1.01 - 1.05. Significantly lower magnetic response than ferritic or martensitic grades.
