What is Monel 400?

MONEL nickel-copper alloy 400 (UNS N04400 / W.Nr. 2.4360 and 2.4361) is a nickel-copper alloy that is hardened by cold working only. Monel 400 has low corrosion rate in flowing seawater, therefore it is widely used in marine applications. Monel 400 also has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in most freshwaters. Monel 400® can be used in temperatures up to 1000 oF. The alloy has great mechanical properties at subzero temperatures, can be used in temperatures up to 1000° F, and its melting point is 2370-2460° F. However, alloy 400 is low in strength in the annealed condition so, a variety of tempers may be used to increase the strength.

Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy (about 67% Ni – 23% Cu) that is resistant to sea water and steam at high temperatures as well as to salt and caustic solutions. Alloy 400 is a solid solution alloy that can only be hardened by cold working. It is regarded as being a ductile Nickel-Copper alloy with resistance to a wide variety of corrosive conditions. This nickel alloy exhibits characteristics like good corrosion resistance, good weldability and high strength. A low corrosion rate in rapidly flowing brackish or seawater combined with excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in most freshwaters, and its resistance to a variety of corrosive conditions led to its wide use in marine applications and other non-oxidizing chloride solutions. This nickel alloy is particularly resistant to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids when they are de-aerated. As would be expected from its high copper content, alloy 400 is rapidly attacked by nitric acid and ammonia systems.

Characteristics of Monel 400 steel plate

Monel 400 is an alloy that is hardenable only through cold working processes. A reason why this solid solution strengthened alloy is preferred to be used in marine engineering is because Monel 400 demonstrates a very low rate of corrosion when exposed to flowing seawater. The SAE or as referred to by Society of Automotive Engineers specification AMS4544 caters to nickel-copper alloy Monel 400, produced in the form of sheet, strip, and plate. These components, as mentioned in the AMS4544, have a 67% Nickel and 30% Copper are supplied in an annealed condition, while offering good resistance to corrosion. The higher content of nickel in Alloy 400 is what imparts the metal to withstand elevated temperatures in addition to its good corrosion resistance properties.

In terms of its mechanical properties, the yield strength of UNS N04400 ranges between 172 MPa - 345 MPa, while its tensile strength is around 517 MPa - 620 MPa. The melting point of monel 400 ranges between 1300–1350 °C, and in an annealed state, its Rockwell hardness is valued at 65. While this alloy exhibits good tensile strength and hardness characteristics even at subzero temperatures, the impact resistance of Werkstoff Nr. 2.4360 undergoes a very minor change when the alloy has been cooled to the temperature of liquid hydrogen or liquid helium.

The Monel 400 plate has a density of 8.8 g/cm3 and showcases enhanced mechanical properties. The QQ-N-281 Clad Plate has a tensile strength between 517 to 620mpa. These plates have a yield strength between 172 to 345mpa and have a modulus of elasticity of 179Gpa. The Monel Alloy 400 Coil has a Poisson ratio of 0.32 and can be easily rolled and transported efficiently. These coils can be cut and sheared to different specifications. The AMS 4544 Foil is one of the thinnest metals in this grade. The foils protect different materials against heat treatment and transportation.

The single-phase Monel Plate offers excellent resistance against corrosive environments and oxidative systems. The high-strength components of the Monel 400 Plate show excellent resistance against chloride stress corrosion cracking due to the presence of molybdenum. Designed to withstand temperatures up to 800 degrees F the Monel 400 Steel Plate is seen in use in seawater applications and steam components at high temperatures. The grade of items within the Monel Alloy 400 Plate shows enhanced resistance across caustic solutions.

These show particular resistance against hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids in the Monel 400 Sheet. The modules perform well in brackish waters and show outstanding resistances against neutral and alkaline salt solutions. The ASTM B127 UNS N04400 Sheet is designed with excellent mechanical properties and can be readily elongated across the system due to an excellent modulus of elasticity. Alloy 400 Strip can be welded to subsequent modules using conventional welding procedures. These materials are hardened by the cold-rolling process, however, the WERKSTOFF NR.2.4360 Perforated Sheet can also be heat treated. JN Alloy are most oldest UNS N04400 Plate supplier.
