A brief description of Nickel 200

Nickel 200 (UNS N02200/W.Nr. 2.4060 & 2.4066) is commercially pure (99.6%) wrought nickel. It has good mechanical properties and excellent resistance to many corrosive environments. Other useful features of the alloy are its magnetic and magnetostrictive properties, high thermal and electrical conductivities, low gas content and low vapor pressure. Nickel 200 is one of the hardest metals in nature. Excellent mechanical properties and high thermal and electrical conductivity are exhibited. In addition, the beneficial properties of Nickel 200 and its chemical structure make it simple to produce and highly resistant to corrosive conditions.

Nickel 200 is commercially pure and has good mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance to alkalis i.e. Sodium hydroxide. It also has good electrical, thermal and magneto-strictive properties. Nickel 200 has excellent mechanical properties, including good ductility and weldability. It also offers desirable magnetic and magnetostrictive properties, high thermal and electrical conductivities, low gas content and low vapour pressure. It is utilised in a number of different environments, where temperatures are under 315°C (600°F).

UNS N02200 has high electrical conductivity, excellent dry fluorine resistance, and super strong electrical, thermal and magnetostrictive properties, useful for caustic soda, resistance to corrosion and resistance to several different chemicals that reduce it. One of the products that has high electrical and thermal conductivity with low vapor pressure and gas content is nickel 200 pipes. These pipes are majorly used in the areas where less corrosive metal are needed. They are primarily used in heat treatment, machining, machining and expansion, etc.

Its resistance to corrosive environments is not limited to reducing elements although this is where it excels as it performs well in certain oxidising conditions too. Good resistance to corrosion in acids and alkalis and is most useful under reducing conditions. Outstanding resistance to caustic alkalis up to and including the molten state. In acid, alkaline and neutral salt solutions the material shows good resistance, but in oxidizing salt solutions severe attack will occur. Resistant to all dry gases at room temperature and in dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride may be used in temperatures up to 550C. Resistance to mineral acids varies according to temperature and concentration and whether the solution is aerated or not. Corrosion resistance is better in de-aerated acid.

Application areas of Nickel 200

The material has been used for the transport of chemicals and aerospace components. In addition due to the materials’ physical properties, including the magnetic and magnetorestrictive properties, thermal and electrical conductivities and with the capability to be produced as fine wire, the applications for the material have extended into electrical and electronic applications such as high power radio valves and infrared emitters in vacuo.

Commercially pure nickel is commonly employed in the electronics field. It offers high electrical and thermal conductivity, compared to other nickel alloys. It also has a high Curie temperature, which is the point at which a material loses its permanent magnetic properties to be replaced with induced magnetism. The world relies heavily on electronics and communications. It’s also a rapidly evolving industry where new systems and products are being introduced at a quick pace to keep up with both corporate and consumer demand. Low-alloy nickel plays an important role in the production of electrical components. This includes the manufacture of anode plates, passive cathodes, plater bars, transistor enclosures and other key electrical parts.

Nickel 200 will not form graphite after extended exposure to temperature providing carbonaceous materials are not in contact with it. The material is however subject to intergranular embrittlement by sulphur compounds above 315 deg C ( 600 deg F) such that machining fluids and external sources of sulphur need to be eliminated to prevent damage during fabrication and subsequent service. Nickel 200 is approved for pressure vessel service ( ASME VIII Div 1) to 1250 deg F.

Nickel Alloy 200 has good resistance to a number of acids and alkalies, however its major use lies in the electrolytic extraction of caustic soda from salt solutions and the subsequent concentration processes. Manufacture and handling of sodium hydroxide, particularly at temperature above 300C.With excellent resistance to distilled and natural waters creating a tenacious oxide film the material is used in the food processing industry.

Nickel 200 is normally limited to service at temperatures below 600° F. At higher temperatures Nickel 200 products can suffer from graphitization which can result in severely compromised properties. When operating temperatures are expected to exceed 600° F, carbon content becomes critical. The lower carbon content of Nickel 201 makes the material resistant to graphitization and therefore less subject to embrittlement. Nickel 200 & 201 are approved for construction of pressure vessels and components under ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Division 1. Nickel 200 is approved for service up to 600° F while Nickel 201 is approved for service up to 1230° F. Melting point is 2615-2635° F.

Why Nickel 200 can be applied to these fields?

The alloy is considered commercially pure grade because it has 99% nickel in it. The alloy also has a maximum of 0.4% iron, 0.35% of silicon, 0.35% of manganese, 0.25% of copper and 0.15% of carbon. Any nickel alloy is considered pure only when these elements remain under the maximum allowed quantities. The Alloy 200 Nickel is pure and has very high corrosion resistance properties. It is resistant against most alkalis. For this reason, most applications in the alkali industry use products made out of this Alloy 200 UNS N02200 alloy. Welding, brazing and soldering are possible on this material because of the addition of the alloying elements into the composition. Some operations such are machining and forming are also possible with pure nickel. There are grades, standards and pressure classes that denominate different qualities of the alloys.Below is its chemical composition list and mechanical properties table.
