General Properties of Stainless Steel 310S Material

Stainless steel 310S is a high temperature chromium nickel austenitic stainless steel with high creep strength that resists oxidation at temperatures up to 2000˚F in dry air. Type 310S forms a tenacious scale at high temperature and is resistant to spalling and performs better than Type 309 in thermal cycling applications. Type 310S is the low carbon version of Type 310 and is utilized for ease of fabrication due to its better formability and weldability. Type 310S is non-magnetic in the annealed and cold worked conditions and is as resistant to corrosion as Type 304/304L.

Type 310S is an AOD melted austenitic stainless steel with high chromium and nickel content.  This alloy has excellent resistance to oxidation at high temperatures making it suitable for furnace rails and dunnage.  This grade is used often in carburizing atmospheres that are common in petrochemical industries. The physical properties of stainless steel 310S are summarized as follows: at room temperature, density, electrical resistivity, shear modulus, Poisson ratio, electrical conductivity, and melting point. Other amazing physical properties include relative magnetic permeability, coefficient of expansion, and thermal conductivity.

Stainless steel 310S has features good oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance and acid and alkali resistance. Besides, it embodies excellent high temperature resistance. With high content of chromium and nickel elements, i.e., 25Cr-20Ni, 310S embodies much better creep strength which allows it to work continuously at high temperature (1150 °C). The high temperature resistant steel tube is specially used for manufacturing electric heating tubes and the like. Since 310S presents austenitic structure under room temperature, therefore it cannot be hardened through heat treatment. Cold working can give it enhanced tensile strength and yield strength. Cold working must be followed by annealing, or the steel properties will be unstable. However, alloy 310S is made for high temperature work, if done with cold working, its creep resistance will decrease on the contrary under high temperature.

What are the 310s Stainless Steel Plates?

The chemistry of Stainless Steel 310S Sheet & Plate gives it superior oxidation Resistance properties under Mildly Cyclic Conditions to an elevated temperature of about 2010°F. Because of the inclusion of high content of chromium and moderate content of nickel, the SS 310S Sheet, tends to be resistant to sulfidation. And therefore the alloy works well in moderately carburizing atmospheres. The maximum operating temperature must be reduced if the Stainless steel UNS S31008 Plate is to be employed in circumstances that are slightly oxidizing, cementing, nitriding, or even in thermal cycling applications. Similar to stainless steel alloy 304, the Stainless Steel 310S Plate also finds acceptance in cryogenic applications where the magnetic permeability is low and the alloy is still tough down to a temperature as low as -450°F. The ASTM A240 Stainless Steel Coils are susceptible to embrittlement, due to the sigma phase when the alloy is exposed to temperatures ranging between 1202°F – 1742°F. However, the toughness property of the SS Werkstoff No 1.4845 Sheet could be restored by furnishing the alloy with a solution annealing treatment between a temperature range of 2012°F – 2102°F.

What is the application of the 310S Stainless Steel Plate?

The Stainless Steel 310S plates are used in the applications that include the manufacture of cryogenic components as well as the use of cryogenic components in furnaces, specifically in the construction of burners, reclamations, doors, ventilators and pipes. As these grades of stainless steel can withstand very hot temperatures, it is also widely used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries as well as in the food processing industry. They are also used in coal combustors, grids, piping and wind boxes for fluid bed furnaces.

The distinctive characteristics of stainless steel 310S plate in smelter and steel melting as well as continuous casting equipment are also used by ore and steel processing facilities. These grades, especially in catalytic recovery systems, flares, recoveries and tube hangers, are also widely used in the petroleum refining industry. This grade 310S is used in applications for power generation; it is used in internal coal gasifiers, pulverised ad tube hangers for coal burners. The properties of stainless steel 310S plate are also utilised by sintering and cement plants in burners and burner shields, feeding, discharge systems and wind boxes. Another area in which these stainless steel grades are widely used in the thermal processing industry. It can be found in coverings and boxes for annealing, burner grids, doors, fans, muffles, retorts and beams for walking. The grades of SS 310S sheet can withstand very high temperatures, thereby making it useful to a wide range of industries.

Conclusion

ASTM A240 Grade 310S stainless steel and plate is a versatile and high-performance material suitable for a range of applications requiring excellent resistance to high temperatures and corrosive environments. Its balance of mechanical properties, SS 310S Chemical Composition, and physical attributes make it an ideal choice for demanding industrial applications.
