What is Incoloy alloy?

Incoloy is a trademark belonging to Special Metal Inc and applied to a family of nickel-iron –chrome alloys. Such is the recognition of the trademark that it is generically used to describe such alloys even if produced by another manufacturer. Incoloy is a superalloy with a high iron content. Compared with Inconel, it has reduced nickel content and increased iron content. This change made his performance somewhat lower, but it also made it more competitively priced. It has less than 50% nickel content, these Incoloy alloys or superalloys are nickel-based alloys that exhibit traits that include good corrosion resistance in aqueous environments, excellent strength and oxidation resistance in high-temperature settings, good creep-rupture strength, and ease of fabrication. This alloy also comes in a variety of grades, whose emphasis is more on resistance to aggressive forms of corrosion, particularly in aqueous environments.

JN Alloy can provide users with products manufactured under four grades: Incoloy 800, Incoloy 800H, Incoloy 800HT, and Incoloy 825. There are various product types, mainly including: Pipes, Plates, Bars, Fittings, Forgings, Flanges, Fasteners, Prefabrication and many more products. We can manufacture products in all sizes and can customize special models according to customer needs. Customer needs have always been the goal of our services.

Incoloy is corrosion-resistant superalloys are widely used in extreme environments where tremendous heat and corrosion resistance is paramount to the integrity of the end product. Incoloy 800 alloy is a very commonly used material. This blog will guide you to understand Incoloy 800.

Incoloy 800

Features of Incoloy 800

Incoloy alloy 800 is an alloy of nickel, iron and chromium. The alloy is capable of remaining stable and maintaining its austenitic structure even after long time exposures to high temperatures. Incoloy alloy 800 has earned a reputation for being a high-performance super-alloy, capable of resisting corrosion in some of the most hostile environments.  This Nickel-Iron-Chromium alloy has good strength and excellent resistance to oxidation and carburisation in high temperature atmospheres. Incoloy 800 also resists corrosion in many aqueous environments, and has been used in some steam generation plants due to its resistance to stress cracking. These alloys have nickel-chromium-iron as the base metals, with additives such as molybdenum, copper, nitrogen and silicon. Therefore it has a wide range of uses. With the high nickel content resulting in good resistance to sulphidation, the iron reducing the risk of internal oxidation and the chromium demonstrating excellent resistance to both oxidation and general corrosion, the critical chemical balance in Incoloy alloy 800 makes it superior in resistance to many types of corrosion.

Studies have found that Incoloy alloy 800 exhibits high corrosion resistance when exposed to molten carbonates, molten eutectic salt deposits, hydrogen peroxide and hydrogen chloride in moist air.The inclusion of chromium in combination with nickel in its chemistry makes it resilient to chemical and environmental corrosion. The alloy also exhibits resistance to physical deterioration, e.g. - surface pitting and cracking. Incoloy 800 is a popular choice in the oil and gas industries because it can withstand sour gas and high chloride environments. The alloy exhibits excellent resistance to seawater and brine, making it well suited to marine applications. Incoloy 800 may be also used for applications such as wet scrubbing, and the reactive atmospheres of furnaces as well as in industries like nuclear fuel.

Performance Analysis of Incoloy 800

Incoloy alloy 800 (UNS N08800 / W.Nr. 1.4876) is a widely used material for construction of equipment requiring corrosion resistance, heat resistance, strength, and stability for service up to 1500°F (816°C). Alloy 800 offers general corrosion resistance to many aqueous media and, by virtue of its content of nickel, resists stress corrosion cracking. At elevated temperatures it offers resistance to oxidation, carburization, and sulfidation along with rupture and creep strength.

The carbon content present in Incoloy 800 alloy is proportional to creeping and cracking properties of alloy such that more carbon content, more are the creeping and cracking properties. Therefore carbon is added significantly in the alloy on the base of special application requirements. Carbon is added by 0.05% to 0.10% in the ASTM and ASME limits.

Alloy 800 also has Aluminum and Titanium, which serve as age-hardening components and improve sulfidation and oxidation resistance. It must be said however, that the content of Al and Ti is quite low and the alloys with higher Al content have significantly better corrosion resistance. Shouldn't be applied in temperatures exceeding 650°C.

Alloy 800 comprises of large mechanical strength over high temperatures. It is suitable for using up to 1500oF. The vital difference between Incoloy alloy series depends on the difference of their mechanical properties. The difference in the mechanical properties is due to difference in their chemical composition and the different temperature annealing. Generally Incoloy 800 alloy possesses higher mechanical properties at the room temperatures and minimum to high temperature exposures.
