17-4PH Stainless Steel is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel. Typical usage is seen in applications requiring high strength and a modest level of corrosion resistance. Strength and toughness desired can be manipulated by temperate range in the heat treatment process. This grade of stainless steel has a typical density of 7.75kg/dm³ and can be magnetised. The strength, corrosion resistance and simplified fabrication can make 17-4 PH stainless a cost-effective replacement for high strength carbon steels as well as other stainless grades. 17-4PH finds specific use in applications where a combination of unusually high strength and moderate corrosion resistance is a determining factor.
Also known as AISI Grade 630, stainless steel alloy grade 17-4PH is a precipitation hardening stainless steel which has extremely high strength and hardness, combined with good ductility and toughness. Its valuable combination of properties gives designers opportunities to add reliability to their products while simplifying fabrication and often reducing costs. Type 17-4PH provides an outstanding combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance, and good mechanical properties at temperatures up to 600°F (316°C). Its unique combination of properties make this alloy an effective solution to many design and production problems.
The stainless steel 17-4PH contains about 17% chromium and 4% nickel with additions of copper. This type of steel has a martensitic crystalline structure in combination with a very hard and brittle structure that is due to stabilization via precipitation heat treatment. The corrosion resistance of 17-4PH is comparable to that of 304 stainless steel in most media. An excellent combination of high strength and good corrosion resistance at temperatures up to 316°C make this stainless steel extremely versatile and an effective solution for many applications.
17-4PH combines high strength and hardness with good corrosion resistance. The alloy is furnished in the solution annealed condition (Condition A). It should not be used at temperatures above 572°F (300°C) or for cryogenic service. Optimal mechanical properties can be obtained by subjecting the alloy to age hardening heat treatments. At the solution treating temperature, 1900°F, the metal is austenitic but undergoes transformation to a low-carbon martensitic structure during cooling to room temperature. This transformation is not complete until the temperature drops to 90°F. Subsequent heating to temperatures of 900-1150°F for one to four hours precipitation strengthens the alloy. This hardening treatment also tempers the martensitic structure, increasing ductility and toughness.
Machinability of Stainless Steel 17-4PH Tubes is noteworthy, providing ease of fabrication and modification according to project needs. Precision CNC processes like drilling, milling and turning allow cost-effective manufacturing solutions as they minimize tool wear, as well as intricate designs or customized configurations tailored specifically for various industries across industries.
Weldability is another key feature of Stainless Steel 17-4PH Tubes, offering versatility when joining construction and assembly projects. Their weldability guarantees secure connections for structural integrity in multiple engineering projects, while seamless integration into complex systems improves overall performance and reliability.
Stainless Steel 17-4PH Tubes can be found in diverse applications, ranging from aerospace components requiring corrosion-resistance for extended service lives in harsh environments to equipment manufacturing in pharmaceutical plants to ensure product integrity and meet stringent hygiene standards. Furthermore, power generation plants use them for boiler systems and steam pipelines due to their robustness and reliability, automotive engineering makes use of them too as exhaust systems or chassis components with their durability and resistance against corrosion.

17-4 PH stainless steel has several applications in the paper, aerospace, food processing, and petrochemical industries. It’s useful for a variety of general metalworking applications.
17-4PH tube is useful in the aerospace industry because it has excellent resistance to corrosion and great tensile strength. Such advantages are critical since airplane components and parts, as well as various aerospace equipment, must operate in a variety of environments and temperatures, making corrosion resistance with high strength essential.
The alloy’s adaptability makes it useful in industries such as paper and pulp. This industry requires stainless steel bar stock types that are both corrosion resistant and sturdy enough to function in extreme conditions. As a result, 17-4PH tube stainless steel bar is an excellent option for the pulp and paper industries. Because the paper and pulp industries interact with water and chemicals, stainless steel bar stock with high corrosion resistance is necessary. It also saves money as the equipment is not prone to rust and breakage.
Every nuclear sector needs to utilize stainless steel. Nuclear power plants must deal with water, fuel, and chemicals to create electricity. As a result, they must employ a 17-4 stainless steel tube with strong corrosion resistance and outstanding toughness. Stainless steel grade 17-4PH tube is valuable to make dry casks.
17-4 PH tube stainless steel is always the first preference for every food processing industry for fabricating equipment since it has good resistance to corrosion. The alloy’s surface finish and high chromium content make it less vulnerable to corrosion, easy to clean, and highly durable, which is essential in the food processing industry.
It is helpful in the gas and oil sector for two significant reasons. Firstly, oil is often found at enormous depths below sea level. Because of its high strength, 17-4PH tube is an excellent choice for piping at these depths. Secondly, Grade 17-4PH tube is highly resistant to corrosion onshore and offshore. It is the best material for drilling rigs and oil pipes due to its excellent resistance to corrosion attacks by hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and poor pH levels during oil prospecting settings.
