What are the characteristics of Hastelloy C22?

Hastelloy C22 alloy (UNS N06022) is one of the well-known and well-proven nickel-chromium-molybdenum materials, the chief attributes of which are resistance to both oxidizing and non-oxidizing chemicals, and protection from pitting, crevice attack, and stress corrosion cracking. Its high chromium content provides much higher resistance to oxidizing media than the family standard, C-276 alloy, and imparts exceptional resistance to chloride-induced pitting, an insidious and unpredictable form of attack, to which the stainless steels are prone. Alloy C22 also has excellent resistance to oxidizing aqueous media including wet chlorine and mixtures containing nitric acid or oxidizing acids with chlorine ions. Other corrosives Hastelloy C22 has resistance to are oxidizing acid chlorides, wet chlorine, formic and acetic acids, ferric and cupric chlorides, sea water, brine and many mixed or contaminated chemical solutions, both organic and inorganic. This nickel alloy also offers optimum resistance to environments where reducing and oxidizing conditions are encountered in process streams.

Like other nickel alloys, Hastelloy C22 alloy is very ductile, exhibits excellent weldability, and is easily fabricated into industrial components. It is available in the form of plates, sheets, strips, billets, bars, wires, pipes, tubes, and covered electrodes. Typical chemical process industry (CPI) applications include reactors, heat exchangers, and columns. Alloy C22 material has the high chromium content provides good resistance to oxidizing media while the molybdenum and tungsten content give good resistance to reducing media. Hastelloy C22 UNS N06022 also has excellent resistance to oxidizing aqueous media including wet chlorine and mixtures containing nitric acid or oxidizing acids with chlorine ions.contact us.

Hastelloy C22 Chemical Composition

Alloy C22 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum solid solution strengthened super-alloy with a nominal chemical composition of 56% nickel, 22% chromium, and 13% molybdenum, with additions of iron, tungsten, and cobalt. It is commonly referred to by the tradename Hastelloy C22 and the universal designation UNS N06022. C22 has excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance, great mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures, and good fabrication properties.

Hastelloy C22 Mechanical Properties

1. Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy C22 is one of the most corrosion resistant alloys in the market. It is even considered better than C276 and C625. This alloy of nickel is resistant to almost all reducing and oxidizing environments. These harsh environments feature strong oxidizers, seawater, and several organic acids. In addition to this, it also has good resistance to chloride-induced localized corrosion. Because of this corrosion resistance property, this nickel alloy has several applications. Hastelloy C22 resists the formation of grain boundary precipitates in the weld heat affected zone, thus making it suitable for most chemical process applications in the as-welded condition.

2. Oxidation Resistance

Hastelloy C22 has great resistance to oxidation, carburization, and sulfidation at high temperatures. However, it is not ideal to use Hastelloy C22 at temperatures above 1250°F. This is due to the possible formation of embrittling phases. Due to this oxidation resistance property, C 22 has great applications.

3. Mechanical Properties

Hastelloy C22 is typically used in the annealed condition which features a minimum yield strength. This alloy can be cold worked to higher strength levels. The melting point of C22 is 1399 °C.

4. Heat Treatment

Hastelloy C22 is usually annealed at 1121°C. It is then followed by rapid cooling. It’s melting point is 2550 °F. Due to this, alloy C22 has several applications.

5. Workability

Hastelloy C22 alloy can be cold worked and hot worked both. Cold working must be performed on this alloy in stages with intervening anneals. Parts of this alloy should be annealed after cold working.Hastelloy C-22 can be fabricated using the same techniques as are used for alloys C-276 or C-4. It can be welded, forged, hot-upset and impact extruded. Alloy C-22 can also be successfully deep-drawn, spun, press formed or punched, although the alloy tends to work-harden. Parts which have been hot formed or severely cold formed should be heat treated at 2050 °F and rapid quenched prior to final fabrication or installation.

Applications of Hastelloy C22 Products

Pollution control

Alloy C22 is an excellent material for containers built to contain corrosive waste. It’s also used as a protective overlay on boiler tubes and waterwalls in coal-fired power plants, due to its resistance to extreme heat and corrosion. This is particularly important because the sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide and water vapour produced by fossil-fuel combustion condense at high temperatures to produce sulphuric and sulphurous acids. This alloy is approved under the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Division 1, for building pressure vessels and components for use at up to 677°C.

Pulp and paper processing

Pulp and paper processing is another sector in which metal components have to function in a highly corrosive environment. Regardless of technology, any pulp or paper mill uses harsh media such as bleaches, acids and salts, and some stages of the production process also involve elevated temperatures. A highly resistant alloy is therefore required to prevent components from deforming, pitting, cracking or corroding for as long as possible. Hastelloy alloy C22 is a popular choice, due to its resistance to all kinds of corrosive media at extreme heat.

Chemical processing industry

In case of Hastelloy C22 applications, you cannot deny the importance it holds in the chemical processing industry. There are so many types of equipment, which have been using this form of application to say the least. You have equipment in chlorinated systems, flue gas scrubbers, pulp and paper bleach plants, sulfur dioxide scrubbers and more, where you can see the use of this alloy for a long run. Then you have pickling systems and even the field of nuclear fuel reprocessing, where you can see the use of this application for sure.

Pharmaceutical Industry

In the pharmaceutical industry, where stringent cleanliness and product purity are essential, Hastelloy C22 is favored for their excellent resistance to corrosion and contamination. These tubes are used in critical applications such as pharmaceutical reactors, storage tanks, and pipework systems. Hastelloy C22’s resistance to a wide range of chemicals and sanitizing agents makes it suitable for maintaining high cleanliness and product integrity standards in pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.

Chemical Processing Industry

The chemical processing industry extensively utilizes Hastelloy C22 due to their outstanding corrosion resistance against various corrosive chemicals. These tubes are often used in applications involving strong acids, such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and phosphoric acid. Hastelloy C22 can withstand the highly corrosive nature of these acids, making them suitable for components in chemical reactors, distillation columns, heat exchangers, and scrubbers.
