Production and Material Standards

ASTM/ASME Standards for Incoloy Pipe

Incoloy pipes are manufactured to strict ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) specifications, which define chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, and testing requirements. ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) adopts these standards for use in pressure-containing applications under the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

Manufacturing Process Overview

Incoloy seamless pipes are manufactured through one of two primary processes:

· Piercing and Rolling (Mannesmann Process): A heated solid billet is pierced by a piercing mill to create a hollow shell, which is then rolled and sized to final dimensions. This is the most common method for Incoloy pipe.

· Extrusion: A hollow billet is heated and extruded through a die to form the pipe. Used for smaller sizes and specialty alloys.

· Heat Treatment: After forming, pipes are solution annealed (typically at 1700-1800°F / 925-980°C for Incoloy 825) to restore corrosion resistance and achieve uniform mechanical properties.

· Testing and Inspection: Hydrostatic testing at 1.5x design pressure (minimum), ultrasonic or eddy current testing, and dimensional inspection per ASTM requirements.

Case Study: Offshore Seawater Injection System

[Application Example] Application: North Sea Oil Platform Seawater Injection

Challenge: An offshore platform in the North Sea required seawater injection piping to maintain reservoir pressure. Seawater at 15°C with 35,000 ppm chloride content, plus injected biocide and oxygen scavenger chemicals. Original design used 316L stainless steel, but experienced chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) failures within 18 months of service.

Solution: Replacement piping specified as Incoloy 825 (UNS N08825) seamless pipe, ASTM B423, NPS 6 Schedule 80. The higher nickel content (38-46%) provides excellent resistance to chloride SCC, while molybdenum (2.5-3.5%) and copper (1.5-3.0%) enhance resistance to general corrosion in seawater.

Result: The Incoloy 825 piping has been in service for 8+ years with no corrosion-related failures. Total installed cost was 3.2x higher than 316L, but lifecycle cost (including avoided replacement and downtime) was significantly lower. The operator has since standardized on Incoloy 825 for all seawater injection systems on new platforms.
