What is 317 stainless steel?

Stainless steel 317 is a type of austenitic stainless steel alloy that is highly resistant to corrosion and possesses excellent strength at elevated temperatures. It is primarily composed of iron, with significant amounts of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, which impart its exceptional corrosion resistance properties. The addition of molybdenum enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, making it particularly suitable for use in harsh environments involving exposure to chemicals, acids, and chloride-containing solutions. The high chromium content provides the alloy with outstanding resistance to oxidation and scaling at high temperatures, making it an excellent choice for applications requiring elevated heat resistance. Additionally, 317 stainless steel offers good formability and weldability, making it versatile for various fabrication processes.

With 3-4% molybdenum, Type 317 of stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloy with compound substances higher than the 316 evaluation types. The higher concentration of molybdenum greatly improves Type 317 resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Along with resistance to corrosion, Type 317 also offers high tensile and creep strength properties at elevated temperatures.

317 stainless steel stainless steel is able to stand against attacks from sulphurous, acetic, formic, citric and tartaric acids and resist to pitting due to phosphorous acid, chlorides, bromides and iodides This makes it an ideal choice of steel grade in projects and situations where the environment requires stainless steel with higher corrosion resistance from chemical interactions, industrial pollution or excessive salt exposure.

What are the mechanical properties of 317 stainless steel?

The mechanical properties of 317 stainless steel can vary depending on the specific heat treatment, manufacturing process, and other factors. However, here are the typical mechanical properties of annealed 317 stainless steel:

Tensile Strength: 515 MPa (75,000 psi) minimum

Yield Strength: 205 MPa (30,000 psi) minimum

Elongation: 35% minimum

Hardness: Brinell hardness of approximately 95 (HB)

It’s important to note that these values are approximate and can vary based on the specific material and processing conditions.

What are the physical properties of 317 stainless steel?

Welding

Grade 317 stainless steel can be welded using fusion and resistance methods. Oxyacetylene welding method is not preferred for this alloy. AWS E/ER317 or 317L filler metal can be used to obtain good result.

Corrosion Resistance

Stainless steel 317 is high-performance austenitic steel resistant to various chemicals and acids. This makes it ideal for use in harsh environments where corrosion is a major concern. Stainless steel 317 pipes can be used in various applications, including chemical, pharmaceutical, and food processing.

High-Temperature Resistance

Stainless steel 317 pipes are also highly resistant to high temperatures, making them ideal for applications where extreme temperatures are an issue. This makes them a popular choice in the petrochemical, oil and gas industries, where temperatures can reach extreme levels.

Hot Working

Grade 317 stainless steel can be hot worked using all common hot working procedures. It is heated at 1149-1260°C (2100-2300°F). It should not be heated below 927°C (1700°F). Post-work annealing can be done to retain the corrosion resistance property.

Cold Working

Stamping, shearing, drawing, and heading can be done successfully. Post-work annealing is performed in order to reduce internal stress.

Heat treatment

Most applications do not require heat treatment for 317 stainless steel. However, if necessary, the material can be annealed at a temperature range of 1850°F to 2050°F and then quenched in water or air. During heat treatment, it is important to ensure that the temperature does not exceed 2100°F, as it may cause cracking.

Applications of 317 stainless steel

Stainless steel 317 is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, making it an ideal material choice for a wide range of applications. This type of stainless steel is used in various industries, including chemical processing, oil and gas, food production, pharmaceuticals, and pulp and paper.

One of the main reasons why 317 stainless steel is favored in these industries is its high resistance to acids such as sulfuric acid. It also has excellent resistance to other irritating chemicals such as chlorides and phosphates.

In the chemical processing industry, 317 is often used in distillation columns that can withstand high temperatures and corrosive environments. Additionally, this stainless steel is used in tanks and storage containers for storing acidic liquids.

The oil and gas industry also uses 317 stainless steel because of its excellent strength at high temperatures. It is commonly used in pipelines that transport natural gas or crude oil over long distances.

Food production facilities use 317 for blenders, mixers, or storage tanks, as they require frequent cleaning with harsh detergents. The same reasoning applies to pharmaceutical plants or laboratories: they require materials that are not easily corrosive but still sufficiently hygienic, without contaminating the products being produced.

Due to the excellent combination of durability under extreme conditions and chemical stability over time, 317 stainless steel can be used in many applications, making it an important component in many different industrial processes today.

Conclusion

Stainless steel 317 offer a range of advantages in construction and infrastructure projects. They provide high resistance to corrosion, extreme temperatures and high-stress levels, ensuring their reliability and longevity. In addition, they require minimal maintenance, reducing costs over time. With their unique properties and advantages, it is no wonder that stainless steel 317 are becoming an increasingly popular choice in the construction industry.
