Seamless pipes are made from a solid round steel billet (round bar). The billet is heated and pierced through the center to form a hollow tube, then rolled or drawn to the desired size and wall thickness. No welding is involved in the pipe body.
Features:
Uniform structure with no weld seam
Excellent pressure resistance and strength
Can withstand higher pressure and temperature
Better corrosion resistance (no weld zone weakness)
Common Standards: ASME B36.10, ASTM A106, A53, A312, A335, etc.
Applications:
High-pressure applications (oil & gas, power plants, refineries)
High-temperature service
Critical piping systems where leakage cannot be tolerated
Welded pipes are produced by rolling stainless steel plates or coils and welding the seam using advanced welding technologies.
Features:
Cost-effective
Excellent dimensional accuracy
Available in large diameters
Applications:
Suitable for low and medium pressure systems
A steel plate is formed into a cylindrical shape and welded using Submerged Arc Welding. The welding is done under a blanket of granular flux, which protects the weld from atmospheric contamination.
Types:
LSAW (Longitudinal SAW) – weld runs along the length
SSAW (Spiral SAW) – weld runs spirally around the pipe
Features:
Suitable for large diameters and thick walls
High productivity and good mechanical properties
Cost-effective for large-scale projects
Applications:
Oil & gas transmission pipelines
Water pipelines
Structural piling
Offshore platforms
A steel strip (coil) is formed into a pipe shape using rollers, then the edges are heated by high-frequency electric resistance and pressed together to form a weld.
Features:
Cost-effective and fast production
Good dimensional accuracy
Suitable for medium to small diameters
Modern ERW pipes have very high weld quality (especially HFW - High Frequency Welded)
Applications:
Oil & gas pipelines (up to moderate pressure)
Mechanical tubing
Water, steam, and air lines
Scaffolding and structural use
Similar to SAW, but uses electric arc (usually with filler metal) to fuse the edges of the plate. It is essentially a type of fusion welding process.
Features:
Used for very thick wall pipes
High weld integrity
Often overlaps with SAW terminology in the industry
Applications:
High-pressure and large-diameter piping
Power plants and heavy industrial applications
