What is Stainless Steel 254 SMO Material?

Alloy 254 SMO is an austenitic stainless steel alloy with 6% molybdenum and nitrogen. By increasing the molybdenum content to 6%, it achieves a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) > 43. It has a very high resistance to crevice and surface corrosion. Alloy 254 SMO was specially developed for the pulp and paper industry and for offshore use on oil and gas platforms. Stainless steel grade 254 SMO is a very high end austenitic stainless steel. It is designed with a combination of impact toughness resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, and pitting and crevice corrosion with strength that is twice that of the stainless steel 300 series.

When comparing 254 SMO to super duplex stainless steels, it is non-magnetic, potentially more straightforward to weld and has a wider operating temperature range. However, it is considerably more expensive due to its greater nickel and molybdenum content and has a significantly lower strength. Therefore, it will mostly be used in applications where the use of super duplex stainless steels is limited.

Stainless steel 254 SMO (also called UNS S31254, 254 SMO, Din 1.4547) is developed for use in  halide-containing environment such as seawater, hydrochloric acid and contaminated sulphuric acid. Stainless steel 254 SMO has a superior resistance to uniform corrosion compared with common stainless steel, especially in acids containing halides.  It has a high content of alloy materials  which gives the steel exceptionally good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The steel also have  very good resistance to stress corrosion cracking.By using Din 1.4547 you get a high alloyed, stainless steel with outstanding  corrosion resistance. The steel is developed for use in halide-containing environment such as seawater. Some common applications are off shore, marine environment and within chemical industry.

Advantages of Stainless Steel 254SMO SMO Bars

Stainless Steel 254 SMO Round Bar has unique properties that make it better than other types of stainless steel. It has a tensile strength of 680 MPa, which is higher than that of 316 stainless steel. Stainless Steel 254 SMO Round Bar also has a yield strength of 300 MPa, which is superior to 316 stainless steel. Due to its high molybdenum and nitrogen levels, it has excellent corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel 254 SMO Round Bar can be welded and fabricated using standard processes. It requires low heat input during welding to reduce the risk of heat damage and distortion. It can be readily hot and cold formed, but because of its strength, it requires better equipment and tools. Machining of Stainless Steel 254 SMO Round Bar is also possible using standard methods. 254 SMO Stainless Steel Round Bars may be forged between 2100 Degree F /1900 Degree F (1150 Degree C /1040 Degree C). The versatility of 254 SMO Bars has led to its use in a variety of applications involving temperatures from cryogenic to above 2000 Degree F (1095 Degree C). 254 SMO Rods demonstrates good performance in high temperature nitriding environments.

Stainless Steel 254 SMO Round Bars Specification

Stainless steel 254 SMO alloy is also called as UNS S31254 that is developed for the use in the seawater and other violent atmospheres that can bear chlorides. This alloy is considered to be the high-end austenitic SS that is comprised of 19.5% to 20.5% of chromium, 6% to 6.5% of molybdenum, 17.5% to 18.5% of nickel and .18% to .22% of nitrogen. The specific level of N, Cr, Ni, MO in this alloy is making it combine the impact toughness resistant to the corrosion cracking in addition to resistance to crevice corrosion and pitting.

Common applications of 254 SMO bars

Gas and Oil Industry

254 SMO bars is a type of stainless steel bars used in the oil and gas industry. It has many distinct features that make it ideal for use in these hazardous environments, such as its high corrosion resistance even under tough conditions; its ability to resist pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress cracking; and its extraordinary strength compared to other metals. Stainless steel 254 SMO material’s unique combination of characteristics makes it an excellent choice for connecting pipes within this sector – ensuring safe operations throughout the life cycle.

Marine Industry

254 SMO bars is a type of stainless steel bars used in the marine industry. It’s composed of high alloy duplex stainless steel containing roughly 25% chromium, 4% molybdenum, and 7% nickel for superior corrosion resistance. It is extremely resistant to pitting corrosion, especially in seawater environments, making it ideal for use on boats, ships, yachts, and other marine vessels exposed to saltwater conditions. 254 SMO bars provides excellent weldability due to its austenitic-ferritic nature and being mechanically strong, making it perfect for use in any boat design or powerboat project with long runs of tubing required.

Chemical Industry

254 SMO bars is an austenitic stainless steel alloy most commonly used in the chemical industry. This material offers corrosion resistance, strength and flexibility, making it suitable for many high-pressure or corrosive media applications. It features a high molybdenum content and good heat and oxidation resistance, making it highly corrosion-resistant to sulfuric acid concentrations up to 50%. Compared to other standard alloys, such as 304L stainless steel, 254 SMO bars also exhibits superior strength at elevated temperatures. Due to its highly corrosion-resistant nature and excellent mechanical properties, 254 SMO bars is frequently used in chemical processing operations. Its composition allows it to stand up against harsh chemicals and extreme conditions – making this alloy one of the most popular choices for use in the chemical industry.

Power Generation

The power generation industry requires materials resistant to high temperatures and pressure. Due to its exceptional strength and corrosion resistance properties, 254 SMO bars is used in steam generators, evaporators, and heat exchangers.

Food Processing Industry

254 SMO bars is a popular choice for the food processing industry due to its corrosion resistance and hygienic properties. It is used in processing equipment for acidic food, such as citrus and tomato fruits, and other food processing applications.
