Grade 904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. This high alloy stainless steel is added with copper to improve its resistance to strong reducing acids, such as sulphuric acid. The steel is also resistant to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion. Grade 904L is non-magnetic, and offers excellent formability, toughness and weldability. Stainless steel 904L contains high amounts of expensive ingredients, such as molybdenum and nickel. Today, most of the applications that employ grade 904L are replaced by low-cost duplex stainless steel 2205.
Stainless steel 904L stainless steels have excellent resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. The high resistance of grade 904L against stress corrosion cracking is due to the presence of high amounts of nickel in its composition. Moreover, the addition of copper to these grades develops resistance to sulphuric acid and other reducing agents in both aggressive and mild conditions.
The corrosion resistance of stainless steel 904L is intermediate between super austenitic grades, with 6% molybdenum content, and standard 316L austenitic grades. Grade 904L is less resistant to nitric acid than grades 304L and 310L, which are free of molybdenum. This steel grade needs to be solution treated following cold working, to achieve maximum stress corrosion cracking resistance under critical environments.
The addition of copper to UNS N08904 gives it corrosion resistant properties superior to the conventional chrome nickel stainless steels, in particular to sulphuric, phosphoric and acetic acids. However, there is limited use with hydrochloric acids. It also has a high resistance to pitting in chloride solutions, a high resistance to both crevice and stress corrosion cracking. Alloy 904L performs better than other austenitic stainless steels due to the higher alloying of nickel and molybdenum.
The high chromium content promotes and maintains a passive film which protects the material in many corrosive environments.904L has a greater resistance to precipitation of ferrite and sigma phases on cooling and welding than other stainless steels containing molybdenum such as 316L and 317L. There is no risk of intercrystalline corrosion on cooling or welding due to the low carbon content. Its maximum service temperature is at 450°C.
JN Alloy is a manufacturer, exporter, and supplier of Stainless Steel 904L pipes, worldwide. Stainless Steel 904L Hot Rolled Pipes Supplier, ASTM B674Stainless Steel TP 904L Square Pipes, AISI / JIS Stainless Steel 904L Pipes. Stainless Steel 904L Oval Pipes, 904L Steel Hex Pipes Exporter. Grade 904L (UNS N08904) pipe is an unstable low carbon austenitic stainless steel with outstanding strength and toughness characteristics at elevated temperatures. The higher composition of our SS 904L pipe provides good resistance to sensitization during welding and enhances resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid.
Stainless Steel 904L is a highly alloyed, low carbon-containing, non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel grade. Copper has been added to the alloy of 904L Stainless Steel Pipe. Therefore, the resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid is very high. The lower content of carbon makes it easier to produce the AISI 904L Welded Pipe according to specification ASTM A312. Despite the lower carbon content, these pipes can be used for high-temperature applications.
The substantial nickel inclusion in the ASME SA 312 TP904L alloy allows the tube to perform exceptionally well even in overground applications. Along with being a non-magnetic alloy, the Stainless Steel 904L Pipe also exhibits good resistance to stress-related corrosion cracking. The presence of molybdenum in the alloy reduces the likelihood of crack corrosion. Besides use in environments and high temperatures, ASTM A312 TP904L is primarily useful for general corrosive applications. Mechanical tests such as shear or longitudinal load tests and flatness tests. Tests were carried out on 904L seamless pipe; to determine its compliance with tensile properties. Keeping by ASTM A312 every 904L Pipe must be furnished in a heat-treated condition, with the suitable heat treatment temperature and reason for cooling or testing.
