What is Stainless Steel 904L?

Alloy 904L (UNS N08904) is a superaustenitic stainless steel that is designed for moderate to high corrosion resistance in a wide range of process environments. The combination of high chromium and nickel content, coupled with additions of molybdenum and copper, assure good to excellent corrosion resistance.

With its highly alloyed chemistry — 25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum, 904L provides good chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance, pitting and general corrosion resistance superior to 316L and 317L molybdenum enhanced stainless steels. Alloy 904L was originally developed to withstand environments containing dilute sulfuric acid. It also offers good resistance to other inorganic acids such as hot phosphoric acid as well as most organic acids. Alloy 904L is easily welded and processed by standard shop fabrication practices.

Grade 904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. This high alloy stainless steel has added copper to improve its resistance to strong reducing acids, such as sulphuric acid. The steel is also resistant to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion. Grade 904L stainless steel is non-magnetic, and offers excellent formability, toughness and weldability. Grade 904L contains high amounts of expensive ingredients, such as molybdenum and nickel. Today, most of the applications that employ grade 904L are replaced by low-cost duplex stainless steel 2205.

Grade 904L stainless steels have excellent resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. The high resistance of grade 904L against stress corrosion cracking is due to the presence of high amounts of nickel in its composition. Moreover, the addition of copper to these grades develops resistance to sulphuric acid and other reducing agents in both aggressive and mild conditions.

The corrosion resistance of grade 904L is intermediate between super austenitic grades, with 6% molybdenum content, and standard 316L austenitic grades. Grade 904L is less resistant to nitric acid than grades 304L and 310L, which are free of molybdenum. This steel grade needs to be solution treated following cold working, to achieve maximum stress corrosion cracking resistance under critical environments.

What are the advantages of 904L stainless steel plate?

At present, with the continuous development of the industry, the requirements for various raw materials are getting higher and higher. Many new materials appear in our sight, such as 904L stainless steel plate, which is a new type of stainless steel material. Alloy 904L (UNS N08904) is a superaustenitic stainless steel designed for moderate to high corrosion resistance in a variety of process environments. The combination of high chromium and nickel content, together with the addition of molybdenum and copper, ensures good to excellent corrosion resistance.

First of all, we need to know that the research and development of 904L stainless steel plate is aimed at some areas that are prone to corrosion, so the main advantage is its corrosion resistance, which is by no means comparable to ordinary stainless steel plates. The 904L stainless steel plate is mainly made of a special corrosion-resistant alloy, mainly because the carbon content of this alloy is very low, which is several times lower than other models, so the probability of corrosion is greatly reduced. As we all know, when stainless steel plates are used in some places with harsh environments, the biggest worry is corrosion. Some will be corroded if they cannot persist for a long time, which is a great waste of manpower, material and financial resources. This is also the biggest advantage of 904L stainless steel plate.

Secondly, the advantages of 904L stainless steel plate are also reflected in welding. Due to the low carbon content, while welding, there is no need to worry about carbon flying out suddenly, causing some serious consequences, which undoubtedly improves the safety and efficiency of the welding process. At the same time, it is suitable for various welding processes, with a wide range of applications, including almost various industrial fields, and has a large market share.

Due to all these properties, the SS 904L Sheet is widely used in piping systems, pollution control equipment, heat exchangers, etc. The 904l stainless plate possesses excellent weldability, formability, and toughness. It is non-magnetic and can effectively resist crevice corrosion. However, due to the presence of expensive elements like molybdenum and nickel in its chemical composition, the 904l steel plate is quite highly priced.

Chemical Properties of SS 904L plate

The Stainless Steel 904L Plate material is an austenitic steel , which comes with added molybdenum. It has superior resistance to localized attacks and it shows good resistance in the sulphuric acid environments. The SS 904l Plate also resists chloride related stress corrosion cracking and due to its low carbon content, it is resistant to sensitization by welding, which in turn, prevents intergranular corrosion.

904l stainless steel sheet is a superaustenitic stainless steel that is created for moderate to high corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments. The mixture of chromium and nickel content, with the additions of molybdenum and copper provides excellent corrosion resistance.Due to nickel 25% and molybdenum 4.5%, ASTM B625 UNS N08904 provides good chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance, pitting and general corrosion resistance which are superior to 316L and 317L. It is develop to out-break environments containing dilute sulphuric acids. 904l stainless steel plate has good resistance to inorganic acids such as hot phosphoric acid. It can be easily welded and processed by standard fabrication process. ss 904l plate is quite ductile and can be easily formed. The addition of molybdenum and nitrogen provides more powerful processing equipment and it may be necessary when compared to the standard 304/304L grades.

Application field of ASTM A240 904l stainless steel plate

ASTM A240 type 904l has excellent resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. The high resistance of it is against stress corrosion cracking and it is due to the presence of high amounts of nickel in its composition. Moreover, the addition of copper develops resistance to sulphuric acid and other reducing agents in both aggressive and mild conditions. 1.4539 plate material, offers good oxidation resistance. However, the structural stability of this grade collapses at high temperatures, particularly above 400°C. ASTM A240 UNS N08904 material can be solution heat-treated at 1090 to 1175°C by following by rapid cooling method. Thermal treatment is suitable for hardening it.
