ASME SB729 UNS N08020 Tubing & ASTM B464 Alloy 20 Welded Tube supplier

Alloy 20 is an austenitic, nickel-iron-chromium-molybdenum alloy with the addition of copper. This combination makes it preferable in applications involving sulfuric, phosphoric, and nitric acids. The chromium and molybdenum content provide good pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. This grade exhibits exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) induced by chlorides. Alloy 20 pipe can be utilized in a wide variety of chemical process environments and has good performance in most acids, alkalines, salts, and seawater.

The Alloy 20 welded tubes can have from 0.35 inches to 0.109 inches of wall thickness while the seamless ones have only up to 0.065 inches. The astm b729 alloy 20 tubes are of the welded pipe specification. With annealing, the minimum tensile strength of the material is at 551MPa and the minimum yield strength is at 241MPa. The alloy 20 seamless tubing has a high melting point of 1443 degrees Celsius. This allows the tubes to be used in high temperature applications. The ASTM SB729 Alloy 20 Tube is meant for high temperature, high pressure tubing. The copper content along with the high nickel content allows the tubes to operate under high temperatures with high acidic contents. Sometimes, the heat exchanger tubes of this grade are called the Alloy 20 U Tube because they are manufactured in the U shape. Alloy 20 Nickel Tubing has nickel, chromium, carbon, copper, molybdenum, manganese, silicon, niobium and other elements in its chemical composition. The copper content is mostly responsible for the sulfuric acid resistance. The exceptionally durable Alloy 20 Pipes is frequently used in pipelines that are buried or submerged in water. This pipe can be used for extended periods of time without disintegrating or degrading because to its strength and endurance.

Characteristics and Properties of Alloy 20 Pipe

Corrosion Resistance

Alloy 20 pipe is a nickel-iron-chromium stainless steel alloy with excellent corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments. One of the significant advantages of Alloy 20 pipes is their exceptional corrosion resistance properties, especially in harsh environments. This pipe is well-recognized for its high resistance to acidic and alkaline solutions, salts, and other chemicals. It is highly resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. It has good mechanical and fabrication characteristics, making it ideal for use in the pharmaceutical, food processing, and chemical industries. Its key features include high tensile strength, good ductility, excellent formability and corrosion resistance to both oxidizing acids (such as nitric acid) and reducing acids (sulfuric acid). This combination of superior qualities makes it suitable for many industrial applications requiring high levels of protection from corrosion.

Strength and Durability

Alloy 20 pipe is a highly durable, corrosion-resistant pipe made of a combination of copper, nickel, and chromium. It has superior strength and durability to other stainless steels due to its high tensile strength of up to 80 ksi (550 MPa) and excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking and pitting. Alloy 20 pipe has excellent mechanical strength and durability, making it a perfect fit for industrial applications. This alloy is well-known for its excellent toughness and ductility, making it highly resistant to stress fractures and deformation. The Alloy 20 pipe can withstand extreme temperatures ranging from -100 degrees to 800 degrees Fahrenheit, making it suitable for harsh operating environments. The material is also very ductile with good machinability properties making it ideal for forming complex shapes while retaining its excellent mechanical properties.

Weldability

Alloy 20 Pipe has excellent weldability and is often used in chemical processing due to its high resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Alloy 20 Pipe has excellent weldability, making it very popular for industrial and manufacturing applications where welding is required. It is relatively easy to join this alloy with other metals like stainless steel or nickel-based alloys, making it an ideal choice for various industries worldwide. It can easily be joined by welding methods like gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), electron beam welding (EBW) and other fusion techniques without any pre or post-heat treatments.

Formability

Another aspect of Alloy 20 Pipe is its formability, which enables it to be easily shaped and moulded into various sizes and shapes. Alloy 20 pipe is highly formable, allowing for parts to be made with tight bends and minimal cracking. This characteristic of Alloy 20 Pipe makes it a top choice in the petrochemical, food, and pharmaceutical industries. The alloy has high tensile strength due to its nickel content, meaning it can withstand both low and elevated temperatures. The copper content adds impact resistance and corrosion resistance, while the molybdenum improves pitting resistance in acidic environments. It also has excellent weldability properties, which makes it a preferred choice for many industries, such as petrochemical processing.

Maintenance

Alloy 20 Pipe requires minimal maintenance and is easy to clean. It is easy to keep it free from contaminants and other harmful substances, making it suitable for producing food and pharmaceutical products. Alloy 20 Pipe is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy that combines excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and superior toughness. It is used in numerous applications requiring extreme corrosion resistance, such as chemical and petrochemical processing, food handling/processing equipment, and other environments where it provides increased mechanical strength over regular stainless steel piping. Maintenance of this alloy typically involves cleaning the pipe using warm water or steam to remove any dirt or debris which might compromise its performance.

Uses of Alloy 20 Pipe

Alloy 20 is one of the super stainless steels designed for maximum acid attack resistance. The nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and copper composition contributes to its overall resistance to the cracking and general pitting assault of chloride on stress corrosion. The alloy is stabilized with columbium to prevent carbide precipitation during welding.

Alloy 20 pipe has high mechanical properties and is quite simple to make. While the alloy was designed for use in industries using sulfuric acid, it is most usually seen in the chemical processing industry. Manufacturing also involves the use of pharmaceuticals, foods, petroleum, chemicals, polymers, explosives, synthetic materials, and a variety of other materials

Furthermore, this exceptional alloy is required in high-temperature exchangers, combining tanks, metal washing, dissolving equipment, and pipes. When compared to higher nickel-based alloys, Alloy 20 Pipe may offer cost benefits when making standard stainless steel.

To begin with, Alloy 20 pipes are commonly used in chemical and related industries, heat exchangers, food and dye manufacturing, SO 2 scrubbers and other harsh environments, pickling racks, tanks, and valves.

Alloy 20 Pipes are used in a variety of industrial applications, including food manufacture, construction, the chemical industry, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, oil exploration, power generation, the pulp and paper industry, condensers, heat exchangers, and so on.

Chemical production, petrochemical and refining, maritime, pharmaceutical, and food processing are all applications for alloy 20 pipes. End-use applications include storage facilities, mixing tanks, agitators, pump and regulator modules, food processing equipment, fasteners, and fittings. According to ASME, applications are limited to a maximum temperature of 1000 degrees F. It is also necessary to determine if the desired corrosion resistance can be attained within the given environment.
