Characteristics of 904L Stainless Steel

Grade 904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. This high alloy stainless steel is added with copper to improve its resistance to strong reducing acids, such as sulphuric acid, gives it corrosion resistant properties superior to the conventional chrome nickel stainless steels, in particular to sulphuric, phosphoric and acetic acids. However, there is limited use with hydrochloric acids.. The steel is also resistant to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion. 904L was originally developed to withstand environments containing dilute sulfuric acid, and is one of the few stainless steels that, at temperatures up to 95°F (35°C), provides full resistance in such environments within the entire concentration range of 0 to 100%. 904L also offers good resistance to a number of other inorganic acids, such as phosphoric acid and most organic acids.

Stainless steel 904L is written as 1.4539 or X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5 according to EN norm and it is written as UNS N08904 according to UNS norm. 904L stainless grade contains very high level of nickel, molibdenium, chromium and combinations of all these elements makes this stainless steel grade very resistant to corrosion resistance. The high chromium content promotes and maintains a passive film which protects the material in many corrosive environments.904L has a greater resistance to precipitation of ferrite and sigma phases on cooling and welding than other stainless steels containing molybdenum such as 316L and 317L. There is no risk of intercrystalline corrosion on cooling or welding due to the low carbon content. Its maximum service temperature is at 450°C.

904L material is one of the strongest material to corrosion at JN Alloy warehouse and if this grade is not enough, then nickel alloys or titanium alloys has to be choosen, because rest of the stainless steel grades will not survive if 904L is not enough. 904L has also a very good anti-magnetic property and for alot of applicatipons, this is another reason to use 904L stainless steel grade. Din 1.4539 stainless steel has a very low content of carbon and low carbon also improving this grade's corrosion resistance level. The grade is non-magnetic in all conditions and has excellent formability and weldability. The austenitic structure also gives this grade excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.

The Benefits of SS 904L Plate

JN Alloy are a leading Stainless Steel 904L Plates Supplier and we provide different thicknesses, forms and sizes of these sheets. It was originally designed to be tolerant in environments containing dilute sulfuric acids but has evolved over time. SS 904l Plate exhibits excellent formability with enhanced stress corrosion cracking across different environments. The low carbon 904l stainless plate can be welded following standard welding procedures. Exhibiting good drawability, these components become less machinable once they are cold rolled. The 904l steel plate can work in temperatures between 1562 to 2102 degrees F in an array of environments.

Extensively used in the chemical processing industry, plates produced from SUS 904L have excellent performance especially in the manufacture of phosphate based fertilizers. Whether to improve its corrosion resistance properties or to improve its mechanical properties or to add value to the ASTM A240 904L SS specified sheets, plates, coils or strips, various kinds of finishes could be applied to its surface. Most commonly, the AISI 904L UNS N08904 is finished with Hairline, satin, Embossed, 8K Mirror, brush, matt, PVC film, Hot rolled plate, Cold rolled Plate or laser film finishes. JN Alloy manufactures and supplies 904L Stainless Steel Sheet for various purposes and applications. Our products are of superior quality and can meet all international standards.contact us.

Stainless Steel 904L Plates Specification

904l is a non-stabilized austenitic grade. 904L Steel sheet is designed with a chemical concentration of 19% to 23% of chromium with 23% to 28% of nickel coupled with 4-5% of molybdenum. SS 904L Sheet has moderate to high corrosion resistance in stress-induced systems. The superior concentration exhibits outstanding toughness and formability. The Stainless Steel 904L Plate is resistant against pitting by acids in aqueous media.

Benefits of Stainless Steel 904l Plates for Marine Applications

Stainless steel 904L provides exceptional corrosion resistance and superior durability, making it ideal for marine applications. Its high nickel content (25%) increases its resistance to chloride-induced stress cracking and pitting. Furthermore, its ability to withstand extreme temperatures makes it a great choice for exposure in high-heat areas. Additionally, stainless steel 904L provides excellent weldability due to low carbon content, so boats can remain structurally sound after years of use in the marine environment. In addition to being highly durable against corrosion and wear, stainless steel 904L is also very aesthetically pleasing – providing a perfect combination of functionality and beauty for any marine application.

Applications of Stainless Steel 904l Plates in Marine Engineering

Stainless Steel 904l Plates are increasingly used in marine engineering due to their superior corrosion resistance. This alloy is composed of low carbon, high nickel and molybdenum content, which makes it highly resistant to localized and uniform corrosion such as crevice attack and pitting. In addition, its higher austenitic stability allows for greater strength than traditional stainless steels, even in extreme temperatures. Its resistance to chlorides, sulfides, and other corrosives makes it ideal for seawater cooling systems and marine construction applications where durability is a must-have quality. Stainless Steel 904l Plates have exceptional weldability properties allowing for stronger joints when joining sections. This makes them an ideal choice for use on vessels that endure hostile environments out at sea.

Maintenance of Stainless Steel 904l Plates in Marine Applications

SS 904l plates are highly resistant to corrosion, they still require proper maintenance to maintain their integrity and strength over time. Regular cleaning and inspection of the plates are essential to prevent the accumulation of marine growth, debris, and other contaminants that may cause pitting or crevice corrosion. Additionally, periodic testing and analysis of the material’s composition, hardness, and tensile strength can help detect and prevent any impending corrosion or damage before it causes severe structural damage.

Conclusion

SS 904l plates are an ideal material for marine applications due to their exceptional corrosion resistance, durability, and strength. They offer numerous benefits, including long-term cost savings, excellent impact strength, and toughness, making them a preferred choice for offshore oil platforms, seawater desalination plants, and chemical processing units. However, proper maintenance and periodic testing are essential to maintain these plates’ integrity and performance over time. Overall, Stainless Steel 904l plates are a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective solution for marine engineering applications.
