Properties of Nickel 201

Nickel 201 is a copper, chromium, nickel and other elements alloy mixture. It possesses higher corrosion as well as oxidation-resistant property. It is used for wide varieties of applications. It has a stability of the chemical composition, high durability, stress corrosion resistant, rugged construction, crevice corrosion-resistant, seamless finishing, etc. The melting point of UNS N02201 is high and ranges between 1435°C - 1446°C. In an annealed condition the yield strength of grade 201 nickel plate is 14900 psi, whereas its Rockwell hardness is valued at 85. Alloy 201 is well suited to be used for Marine and offshore engineering applications due to its excellent performance in flowing seawater even when the alloy has been exposed to high velocity conditions. In comparison to cold worked Alloy 201 Strips, both hot-rolled and annealed strips are known to have a higher impact strength.

Nickel 201 Round Bar: Properties, Applications, and Advantages

Similar to nickel based grade alloy 200, grade Nickel 201 round bar, too is referred to as commercially pure wrought nickel. Despite the fact that Alloy 201 Rod has properties which make it just like alloy 200, however, the distinction between both these alloy grades is with regards to the content of carbon.  The content of carbon used to alloy the material used to make these bars is far lower i.e. a max of 0.02%. The lower carbon content present in the Pure Nickel 201 Flat bar is what aids the alloy in terms of the prevention of embrittlement.

Nickel 201 round bars are a critical material in industries requiring exceptional corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical performance in extreme environments. As a low-carbon variant of commercially pure nickel (Nickel 200), Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) is specifically designed to address carbide precipitation issues at elevated temperatures, making it ideal for high-temperature applications.

Composition and Key Properties UNS N02201

Nickel 201 is composed of at least 99.0% nickel, with trace amounts of iron (≤0.40%), manganese (≤0.35%), and carbon (≤0.02%). Its low carbon content (<0.02%) distinguishes it from Nickel 200, ensuring reduced susceptibility to embrittlement caused by carbide formation during prolonged exposure to temperatures between 315°C and 675°C (600°F–1250°F).

Key properties include:

Corrosion Resistance: Resists oxidation, reducing atmospheres, and alkaline solutions. Performs well in acidic environments, including hydrochloric and sulfuric acids at moderate temperatures.

Thermal Stability: Maintains mechanical integrity up to 600°C (1112°F).

Electrical Conductivity: High conductivity suits electrical and electronic applications.

Magnetic Properties: Non-magnetic below 360°C (680°F).

Mechanical Strength: Tensile strength of 380–480 MPa (55–70 ksi) and yield strength of 100–300 MPa (15–43 ksi), depending on temper.

Applications of Nickel 201 Round Bars

Nickel 201 round bars are widely used in industries demanding reliability under harsh conditions:

1. Chemical Processing: Pumps, valves, and heat exchangers handling corrosive chemicals.

2. Aerospace: Components exposed to high temperatures and combustion gases.

3. Electronics: Battery components, sensor housings, and conductive parts.

4. Food Processing: Equipment requiring non-contaminating, corrosion-resistant materials.

5. Energy: Nuclear reactors and fuel cell systems due to low gas permeability.

6. Marine: Fasteners and fittings resistant to saltwater corrosion.

Advantages Over Alternatives

High-Temperature Performance: Outperforms stainless steel and Nickel 200 in carburizing environments.

Fabrication Flexibility: Easily machined, welded (using TIG or MIG methods), and cold-worked.

Longevity: Reduces maintenance costs due to minimal degradation over time.

Regulatory Compliance: Meets ASTM B160, B161, and B162 standards for material consistency.

Selection Considerations

When sourcing Nickel 201 round bars, evaluate:

Dimensions: Diameter, length, and tolerances for precision applications.

Surface Finish: Options include hot-rolled, cold-drawn, or polished surfaces.

Certifications: Material test reports (MTRs) to verify compliance with industry standards.

Conclusion

Nickel 201 round bars are a versatile solution for industries prioritizing durability in corrosive or high-temperature settings. Their unique combination of purity, thermal stability, and ease of fabrication makes them indispensable in critical applications. By understanding their properties and specifications, engineers and procurement professionals can optimize material selection for long-term performance and cost efficiency.
