What Is ASTM B572 Standard?


ASTM B572 is an international standard published by the American Society for Testing and Materials, formally titled “Standard Specification for UNS N06002, UNS N06230, UNS N12160, and UNS R30556 Heat-Resistant and Corrosion-Resistant Alloy Bar or Rod.”

 

This standard primarily specifies requirements for several specific alloy bars used for heat resistance and corrosion resistance. According to this standard, currently certifiable alloys include UNS N06002, UNS N06230, UNS N12160, and UNS R30556.

 

The standard defines bar stock as: forged or rolled metal products (Bar) with uniform strength, length, and diameter; or hot-finished products (Rod) with a circular solid cross-section supplied in straight lengths.

 

The standard covers product finish options such as hot-finished, annealed, descaled/ground/turned, dimensional tolerances, chemical composition meeting strict specification limits, mechanical properties, and associated test methods and sampling procedures.

 

The latest version of this standard is ASTM B572-24, approved in 2024.

 

What is UNS N06002?

 

UNS N06002, commercially known as Hastelloy X or 2.4665, is a nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum alloy. Its chemical composition features nickel as the base metal, containing 20.5%-23.5% chromium for superior high-temperature oxidation resistance, 8.0%-10.0% molybdenum and 0.2%-1.0% tungsten to enhance resistance to reducing media corrosion and high-temperature strength, along with 17%-20% iron to optimize cost and high-temperature creep properties. Trace elements such as cobalt and carbon further contribute synergistic strengthening.

 

The alloy's defining characteristic lies in its exceptional high-temperature performance, with long-term service temperatures reaching 900°C and short-term exposure tolerating up to 1080°C. It maintains excellent oxidation resistance and resistance to carbide/nitride formation even at 1200°C, coupled with above-average creep resistance and sustained strength.

 

Regarding mechanical properties, its annealed room-temperature tensile strength typically exceeds 655 MPa, yield strength surpasses 240 MPa, and elongation reaches over 30%.

 

Additionally, it exhibits excellent processability, including favorable cold and hot formability alongside weldability, generally requiring no post-weld heat treatment.

 

Consequently, UNS N06002 is extensively used in critical components operating under extreme high-temperature and corrosive conditions, such as combustion chambers in aircraft engines, gas turbine blades, radiation tubes in industrial furnaces, and high-temperature reactors in chemical processing.
