Properties of Alloy 347

Stainless Steel 347 has slightly improved corrosion resistance over type 321 stainless steel in strongly oxidizing environments.Alloy 347 (S34700) is stabilized stainless steel which offers as its main advantage an excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range from 800 to 1500°F (427 to 816°C).  Alloy 347 has a slightly improved corrosion resistance over other alloys of stainless steel in strongly oxidizing environments as a result of the addition of columbium (niobium) and tantalum. Columbium-tantalum carbides precipitate within the grains instead of forming at the grain boundaries. Type 347 should be considered for applications requiring intermittent heating between 800ºF (427ºC) and 1650ºF (899ºC), or for welding under conditions which prevent a post-weld anneal.

The addition of columbium to the ASTM A312 Gr TP347 makes best suited for applications that work under high temperature and are prone to oxidation. ASTM A312 TP347 is available in the size range of ½ inches to 24 inches and can be manufactured using electric resistance weld, electric fusion weld, or can be seamless.


SA 312 TP 347 that are made using electric fusion are available in the size range of 6 inches to 100 inches. They offer good creep strength even at elevated temperatures. 347 Stainless Steel Pipe is mostly used in marine environments, marine architecture, and in equipment and laboratory furniture. SS 347 ERW pipes are made through electric resistance weld and are therefore good for heavily welded applications. They are supplied in annealed, bright annealed, pickled, cold drawn, and polished condition. SS 347 Welded Pipe have a different thickness that is defined in the different schedules.


Stainless Steel 347 Pipe is also resistant to various organic and inorganic chemicals, along with sterilized solutions. They are used in exhaust manifolds, aircraft collector rings, high temperature chemical processing equipment, and in expansion joints. SS 347 Seamless Pipe can also resist intergranular corrosion. It can also avoid chromium carbide precipitation due to the addition of columbium. 347 SS pipes are not welded with oxyacetylene welding. When the chemical characteristics are analyzed, it is evident that the metal is composed of chromium and molybdenum. It also contains columbium, which gives the metal anti-corrosive properties and resistance to crevice corrosion. Other chemical components are similar to those found in stainless steel 304. It has identical mechanical characteristics, yielding 205 MPa and tensile strength of 515 MPa. This tubing is available in thicknesses ranging from 0.4 mm to 30 mm and widths ranging from 1/8″ to 48″. It can be welded and seamless and is available in round, rectangular, and square forms.
