Reducing Outlet Tee (RFT)

Reducing Outlet Tee, often called a "reducing tee," is a three-way pipe fitting shaped like the letter "T." Its key characteristic is that the branch outlet has a nominal pipe size smaller than the two run outlets. The run is typically sized for the main pipeline, while the smaller branch is used to tap off a secondary line.

Function: To efficiently divert or combine flow from a main line into a smaller auxiliary line while maintaining the primary header size. This avoids unnecessary reductions in the main line, saving space, weight, and cost.

Common Applications:

Branch connections for instrumentation (gauges, sensors).

Tapping off a smaller process line from a large supply header.

Connecting equipment with different inlet/outlet sizes.

Drain or vent connections on larger pipes.

Reducing Outlet Cross (RFC)

Reducing Outlet Cross (or "reducing cross") is a four-way fitting shaped like a plus sign (+). In this configuration, one or more of the four outlets has a different (smaller) NPS than the main run. The most common types are:

One Reducing Outlet: The branch on one axis is smaller.

Two Reducing Outlets on the Same Axis: Both ends of the branch run are smaller, while the main run is full-size.

Two Reducing Outlets on Opposite Axis: More complex flow division.

Function: To interconnect four pipes, facilitating flow in multiple directions, where at least one stream requires a change in pipe diameter. They are used in systems requiring more complex distribution than a tee can provide.

Common Applications:

Complex distribution manifolds in chemical processing.

Fire protection sprinkler system headers.

Intersections in dual-process lines.

Specialty applications in shipbuilding and power generation.

Both tees and crosses are butt-weld fittings. They are welded directly to the pipe, creating a permanent, strong, and leak-proof connection that minimizes turbulence and pressure drop compared to threaded or socket-weld alternatives.

Overview of ASME B16.9 Standard

ASME B16.9 standard, titled "Factory-Made Wrought Buttwelding Fittings," establishes the pressure-temperature ratings, sizes, markings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, and testing requirements for butt weld fittings.

First published in 1951 and regularly updated, it covers fittings from NPS 1/2 through NPS 48, including tees, crosses, elbows, caps, and reducers. The standard ensures compatibility with pipes conforming to ASME B36.10M and ASME B36.19M.

For reducing outlet tees and crosses, the standard specifies outside diameters at the bevel, center-to-end dimensions for both the run (C) and outlet (M), and tolerances. Materials typically include carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel grades like 304, 316, and duplex variants, which we specialize in supplying.

How to Use the Size Chart and Specify Correctly

Identify Line Sizes: Determine the NPS of your main pipeline (run) and the required NPS of your branch line(s).

Determine Schedule/Wall Thickness: Match the fitting schedule to your pipe schedule. For stainless steel, it's common to specify by a standard ASME B36.19 and wall thickness designation.

Reference the Chart: Use the chart to find the critical Center-to-End (C) dimension for your run size. This is vital for piping isometric drawings and spool fabrication.
